Type Locality and Naming

Type section at Zaoshang village, close to Chengtanjiang, Liuyang County, Hunan Province. Named by Wang Sien et al., 1985, Stratigraphy of China II, Jurassic of China, Beijing: Geological Publishing House. First appeared in a 1975 manuscript by Institute of Geology and Coal Exploration, China Coal Research Institute.

Synonym: lower Shikang Fm


Lithology and Thickness

Alternating beds of conglomerate, rudite, gray thick-bedded quartzose sandstone and sandy mudstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The next older regional unit in east Hunan is the Qixia Fm of early Permian.

Upper contact

Conformable contact with the overlying Shikang Fm.

Regional extent

The Xiuning Basin is a small intermountain basin during the Mesozoic.
